SUMMARY:HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology Assistance
DESCRIPTION:Every blood test\, biopsy\, and diagnostic result that comes back from a laboratory depends on what happens behind the scenes. That’s where a pathology assistant works. It’s a role that’s in steady demand\, genuinely skilled\, and often flying under the radar as a career option. \nThe HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology Assistance is your entry point into laboratory-based pathology work. It’s a nationally recognised qualification that trains you to receive\, process\, and prepare specimens for analysis – the precision work that keeps diagnostic laboratories running. If you’re drawn to the science and procedural side of healthcare\, this pathology assistant course is worth a close look. \nDelivered by Adept Training (RTO 90991) at our Harris Park campus\, the course combines face-to-face classroom and laboratory sessions with flexible self-paced online theory. You have up to 12 months to complete it. \nUnderstanding the Difference Between Pathology Assistance & Pathology Collection\nThese two qualifications are frequently confused\, so it’s worth being clear. \nThe HLT37525 Certificate III in Pathology trains you to collect specimens from patients\, venepuncture\, swabs\, breath tests\, in clinics\, hospitals\, and community settings. It’s a patient-facing\, clinical role. \nThe HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology Assistance is the lab-side qualification. Once specimens arrive at the laboratory\, a pathology assistant takes over: receiving\, sorting\, processing\, and preparing samples so they’re ready for analysis. The work is procedural\, precise\, and based inside the lab rather than out with patients. \nBoth are valuable\, in-demand career paths. Which one fits you comes down to where you want to be working day-to-day. \nWhat You’ll Learn in This Pathology Assistant Course\nThis HLT37415 Cert III in Pathology Assistance is built around the practical skills you’ll actually use in a laboratory environment. By the time you complete your studies\, you’ll be able to: \n\nReceive\, sort\, and triage incoming specimens\nPerform centrifugation and specimen processing and separation\nPrepare culture media and simple solutions\nPerform basic laboratory tests under supervision\nLabel\, store\, and dispatch samples accurately\nFollow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in a lab setting\nHandle dangerous goods\, biohazardous materials\, and sharps safely\nApply infection control and Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards specific to a laboratory environment\nMaintain quality principles across all lab procedures\nOperate common laboratory instruments under guidance\nWork effectively as part of a healthcare team\n\nAccuracy is the foundation of this role. A mislabelled sample or a processing error can affect clinical decisions downstream. Our trainers help build those habits from the first session. \nThe Lab Environment: What to Expect\nThis is a hands-on pathology assistant course. Your practical learning takes place in a laboratory setting\, not just in a classroom. You’ll work with real laboratory equipment\, centrifuges\, specimen processing instruments\, culture media\, and follow the same SOPs you’d encounter on the job. \nA typical training day involves classroom time and practical work. You’ll handle specimens\, operate instruments under supervision\, and build the procedural habits that employers expect from someone stepping into a lab assistant role. The lab time is what turns the theory into something you can actually do. \nCareer Outcomes: Where a Certificate III in Pathology Assistance Takes You\nThe HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology Assistance opens the door to roles including: \n\nPathology Laboratory Assistant\nSpecimen Reception Officer\nLaboratory Aide\nLaboratory Attendant\nBiomedical Laboratory Assistant\nInstrument Operator\nSpecimen Collection Officer\n\nYou’ll find these roles across public and private hospital laboratories\, major diagnostic providers (including Australian Clinical Labs\, Healius\, and Dorevitch Pathology)\, labs involving soil\, water\, and food testing\, as well as research settings. \nFurther study pathway after your pathology assistant course: Graduates looking to advance their career can progress into the MSL50122 Diploma of Laboratory Technology (Pathology)\, which broadens their scope into more technical laboratory functions and opens higher-level roles. \nHow the Course is Delivered\nThe HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology Assistance uses a blended delivery model: \n\nFace-to-face sessions in the classroom at our Harris Park campus\nPractical skills sessions at local laboratories\nSelf-paced online theory – complete in your own time with a computer and internet access\nStudents have up to 12 months to complete the full qualification\n\nCurrent intake dates for our pathology assistant course: \n\n\n\nStart Date\nFace-to-Face Sessions\n\n\nThursday 19 February 2026\nEvery Thursday & Friday\, 9:30am – 3:00pm\n\n\n\nOur trainers bring genuine industry experience into every session. Having worked in these environments\, they offer practical\, up-to-date knowledge. \nCould Your Course Be Subsidised?\nThe standard course fee is $3\,500\, but this course may be available at a significantly reduced cost through the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled program. Eligible students can access subsidised training. Check your eligibility here. \nFlexible payment plans are available for students who aren’t eligible for government funding. \nWho is This Pathology Assistant Course For?\nThe pathology assistant course suits people who: \n\nWant to work in a structured\, science-based healthcare environment\nAre interested in the science and processing side of pathology rather than patient-facing collection work\nWant to enter the healthcare sector without committing to a science or biomedical degree or years of university study\nAre methodical\, detail-oriented\, and comfortable working with biological specimens\nAre changing careers\, re-entering the workforce\, or exploring healthcare for the first time\n\nNo prior experience is required. If the precision and procedure of laboratory work appeals to you more than clinical patient contact\, this is a strong fit and worth considering. \nEntry Requirements\nWhat you’ll need for this pathology assistant course: \n\nA sound understanding of written and spoken English and maths – assessed through Adept Training’s Digital Language\, Literacy and Numeracy (DLLN) assessment at enrolment\nA computer with internet access for online components\n\nThe following documents at enrolment: \n\nCompleted enrolment form\nUnique Student Identifier (USI)\nPhoto ID\nProof of residency (birth certificate\, passport\, Green Medicare Card\, or citizenship certificate)\nEmergency contact details\n\nImmunisation: While not a prerequisite\, we strongly recommend vaccination for Hepatitis A and B before commencing\, which is standard practice for anyone working with biological specimens. \nReady to Start Your Pathology Career?\nIf you’re looking for a hands-on entry point into laboratory work\, the HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology Assistance is a practical\, nationally recognised pathway that gets you into laboratory work without years of study. \nAdept Training has been delivering pathology qualifications for almost three decades. Our face-to-face delivery\, experienced trainers\, and commitment to student support make us one of Sydney’s most trusted providers of healthcare training. \nReady to find out more? Submit an enquiry and one of our team will be in touch to talk through your options\, funding eligibility\, and the next intake. \nAdept Training Pty Ltd | RTO 90991
