What will I learn?

During the course you will gain the skills and knowledge to undertake medical procedures such as ECGs, perform blood and non-blood collections and assist with preparation for medical procedures. You will also learn administrative skills such as medical accounting and how to maintain patient records, stock and equipment. You will learn about medical terminology, how to communicate effectively and a vast range of other skills.

Is this course face-to-face or distance?

This course is delivered through blended learning. You will be required to attend face-to-face classes and this qualification contains an online learning and assessment component. Throughout your course you will be under the supervision and mentorship of a highly skilled, qualified trainer.

Units of competency

HLT47715 Certificate IV in Medical Practice Assisting consists of 23 units of competency made up of 19 core units and 4 electives. Please note that you will need access to a laptop or similar (not a mobile phone), internet, email, Microsoft and Adobe to complete your online learning and assessment. * Work placement is arranged if you do not currently work in a pathology environment.

Entry requirements

This course requires you to have a good understanding of written and verbal English. You will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment (LLN) prior to enrolment. While not a prerequisite, we strongly recommend all students be immunised for Hepatitis A and B before enrolling in the course. Please note all students are required to provide the following documents on enrolment:

  • Completed enrolment form
  • USI Number
  • Photo ID
  • Proof of Residency (Birth Certificate, Passport, Green Medicare Card or Citizenship Certificate)
  • Language, literacy and numeracy assessment
  • Emergency Contact
