HLT47715 Certificate IV in Medical Practice Assisting

A GP practice runs on two things: good clinical care and solid administration. The HLT47715 Certificate IV in Medical Practice Assisting trains you in both, giving you the skills to work confidently on either side of the consulting room door.

This qualification covers clinical procedures including ECGs, blood and non-blood collection, and clinical measurements, alongside the administrative side of healthcare: Medicare billing, patient records, appointment management, and practice coordination. It’s a genuinely broad skill set, well regarded by employers in general practice and specialist settings across Australia.

Delivered by Adept Training (RTO 90991) at our Harris Park campus, this medical assistant course combines face-to-face practical training with flexible online learning. Classes run two days each week, face-to-face and with two intake dates available each year.

What Does a Medical Practice Assistant Do?

A medical practice assistant works alongside GPs and other practitioners, handling both the clinical and administrative sides of patient care. On any given day, that might involve:

  • Greeting and triaging patients as they arrive
  • Taking clinical measurements (blood pressure, weight, height, oxygen saturation, temperature)
  • Performing electrocardiography (ECG)
  • Collecting blood specimens via venepuncture and processing non-blood specimens
  • Assisting the GP during consultations and minor procedures
  • Maintaining infection control standards throughout
  • Managing stock and clinical equipment
  • Processing Medicare, DVA, and private health billing
  • Maintaining accurate patient records
  • Scheduling appointments and managing correspondence
  • Using medical terminology accurately across all patient interactions

It’s a role that keeps a practice functioning. Doctors rely on medical practice assistants to handle the details on both sides of the consulting room door. The flexibility in skills gained from this medical practice assisting course is exactly why dual-skilled graduates are in demand.
