The Certificate III in Pathology (Collection) is the industry-recognised entry credential for pathology collectors across Australia, and it's the qualification Adept Training is best known for. You'll build skills across venepuncture, specimen handling, infection control and patient care through online self-paced theory combined with practical classes at our Harris Park campus.
Placement is organised for you. Our on-site collection centre operates in partnership with 4Cyte Pathology, providing students with access to the 35 hours of clinical experience required as part of the course. You'll collect from actual patients throughout, not simulations. This is something larger institutions cannot offer, and it consistently shows in the preparedness of our graduates when they start work.

HLTSS00059 Venous Blood Collection Skill Set
The Venous Blood Collection Skill Set is a nationally recognised, focused qualification for healthcare workers who need to perform venepuncture in their existing role. Practice nurses, overseas-trained medical professionals and clinical support staff are the primary students for this course. It covers three units of competency across infection prevention, clinical risk management and venous blood collection technique.
Delivery is blended: online sessions via Microsoft Teams combined with hands-on practical training at our Harris Park campus. You'll complete a minimum of 20 supervised venepunctures in class before moving to 35 hours of workplace placement. Graduates receive a statement of attainment that includes HLTPAT014 Perform Venous Blood Collections.
Your trainer will guide you through the practical skills before placement, so you can build confidence gradually rather than being expected to perform independently from the start.
HLT37415 Certificate III in Pathology (Assistance)
Certificate III in Pathology (Assistance) is built for people who want to work in the laboratory rather than the collection room. Pathology assistants receive and prepare specimens, operate instruments and keep the lab running accurately behind the scenes. It's methodical, science-focused work, and this qualification is the recognised entry point into it.
The course uses a blended delivery model, with online sessions via Microsoft Teams, practical sessions at Harris Park, and real-world practical application in a pathology laboratory.
Potential career pathways include:

These roles support the accurate handling and preparation of specimens behind the scenes. The qualification may also provide a pathway to further study through the MSL50122 Diploma of Laboratory Technology.

Short Courses: Drugs of Abuse Collection, ECG and Spirometry
These single-unit accredited courses are designed for clinical staff who want to add a specific skill to their scope without enrolling in a full qualification. HLTPAT010 Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing covers workplace drug and alcohol testing. HLTCAR008 Perform Electrocardiography (ECG) covers ECG recording, and HLTHPS011 Measure Spirometry covers lung-function testing.
Each course is delivered with hands-on practical training and issues a nationally recognised statement of attainment on completion.

While Australia does not have a single government licence for pathology collectors, employers commonly look for a nationally recognised qualification completed through a registered training organisation. Certificate III in Pathology Collection is a widely recognised entry qualification across the industry.

What Is the Difference Between a Pathologist and a Pathology Collector?
These two terms appear in the same searches, but the careers behind them look nothing alike.
A pathologist is a specialist medical doctor who analyses tissues and test results to diagnose disease. The pathway involves a medical degree plus postgraduate specialist training through the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, totalling around 13 years or more. No short pathologist certification course leads there.
A pathology collector, or phlebotomist, is the person who collects blood and other specimens that make diagnoses possible. How much do pathology courses cost, and can I pay them off?
Certificate III in Pathology Collection is $3,900 and Certificate III in Pathology Assistance is $3,500. Both are available with interest-free payment plans so you can spread the cost over the duration of your study. How long are the courses?
Most students complete Certificate III in Pathology Collection in three to four months. The Venous Blood Collection Skill Set is considerably shorter. Certificate III in Pathology Assistance allows up to 12 months, and short courses in ECG and spirometry run as single sessions with online theory and are followed by practical skills and assessment.
How much do pathology collectors earn?
Pay varies depending on your state, employer and level of experience. Entry-level pathology collectors typically start at a competitive rate, with earnings increasing as you build experience and take on more responsibility. What if my computer skills aren't strong?
You don't need to be highly technical, but you will need to be comfortable using a computer, browser and email to access online learning and attend Microsoft Teams sessions. At enrolment, all students complete a Digital Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment. This helps us identify whether you need any additional support before you begin, so nothing catches you off guard once you're in the course.
Can I complete the course early?
Yes. The timeframes we give are typical completion times, not fixed end dates. If you move through the material and assessments ahead of schedule, you can finish earlier. Your trainer will guide you through the pace that works best for you.
Where will I do my work placement?
Your placement runs through our own on-site collection centre, operated in partnership with 4Cyte Pathology at our Harris Park campus. You won't need to source a clinic yourself or wait for a spot to become available. Placement hours are coordinated for you, and you'll collect from real patients throughout.
Will Adept Training help me find a job?
While we can't guarantee employment, we do more than hand you a certificate and wish you well. Our team provides résumé guidance and interview preparation as part of the support we offer graduates. Industry regularly recruits directly from Adept Training, and many of our students have gone on to work within the pathology networks they were placed with during training. Do I need experience to enrol?
No prior healthcare experience is required for either Certificate III course. You'll complete a language, literacy and numeracy check at enrolment, but no clinical background is expected. The Venous Blood Collection Skill Set is the exception: it's designed specifically for people already working in a healthcare setting.
